Choosing a journal without wasting six months

Scope mismatch causes more desk rejections than weak research does.

Publication 8 min read

Desk rejection is not a judgement on your work. It is usually a judgement that your work does not belong in that journal — which is a decision you could have made yourself, before submitting.

Start from the contribution, not the impact factor

Write one sentence: what does this paper add that did not exist before? Then find the journals that have published the papers you cite most heavily. That is your shortlist. Reversing the order — picking a high-impact journal and hoping the paper fits — is how six months disappear.

Verify indexing yourself, at the index

Check Scopus coverage on Scopus, Web of Science coverage on Web of Science, and UGC-CARE listing on the UGC-CARE site. Never rely on a journal's own claim about its indexing, and never rely on a list downloaded a year ago. Journals are added and discontinued continually, and a title that was indexed when your senior published may not be now.

Quartiles are recalculated every year

Q1 to Q4 rankings come from citation metrics that are recomputed annually. A journal can move between quartiles from one year to the next, and it can move between subject categories too — a journal may be Q1 in one category and Q3 in another. When you state a quartile in your CV or your progress report, state the year.

Reading a journal's aims and scope properly

  • What methods do they actually publish? A journal that says it welcomes qualitative work but has published none in three years is telling you something.
  • What geography? Many journals prefer or require international relevance.
  • What is the typical article length and structure?
  • What is the realistic review time, from their own reported statistics?
  • What are the article processing charges, and are they stated openly before submission?

The last check

Open three recent issues. If you cannot imagine your paper sitting beside those articles, it does not belong there — and one honest hour spent on this check is worth more than any submission strategy.
